Spring Sports Safety

February 28, 2017

Grab your cleats, racket, ball, and knee pads, because spring sports are finally here! Every year, thousands of kids take to the field and play their favorite games. And while sports are a great way to build leadership skills, practice teamwork and get exercise, they can sometimes lead to injury. Make sure your child stays in the game this season by following these safety tips.

Stay hydrated: It’s always important to stay hydrated when you’re working out, but it’s especially important for children and teens. Make sure your kids are getting plenty of water before, during, and after a game. And that’s right – we said water! Fruit and energy drinks have high amounts of sugar, caffeine and chemicals that aren’t good for growing bodies.

Wear a mouthguard: Did you know that an athlete is 60 times more likely to sustain an oral injury if they’re not wearing a protective mouthguard? But don’t let that statistic scare you into keeping your child out of sports. Thanks to mouthguards, dental injuries are among the easiest to prevent.

Stretch before and after a game: A good warm-up will not only make your children perform better, but it will keep them from pulling or tearing a muscle.

Snack before a game: A healthy snack of almonds, granola, or fruit will prevent your little one from getting lightheaded while running around and will give them plenty of energy.

Have an emergency medical plan: Just in case something does happen, it’s always good to have a plan. Whenever you go to a game, make sure you have your health care provider’s number programed into your phone and a small first aid kit in the car.

In addition to thinking about your child’s safety, we also encourage you to think about the safety of your athletic equipment. Faulty equipment is just another way that students can be injured during their season. At Nickerson Corporation, we believe that students should be provided with athletic equipment that is durable, innovative and most importantly, safe!
