Encourage Your Students To Be Thankful

November 21, 2016

Thanksgiving is only a few days away, and while your students are probably anticipating their break, it’s important to encourage them to reflect on what they are thankful for. Here are some ways to incorporate Thanksgiving and being thankful into your lesson plans this week:

“I’m Thankful For” Essay:

Start by asking students to compile a list of three things that they are thankful for this year. Then, have them elaborate on why! This activity is a great way to have students work on their essay writing, and will help them reflect on what is important to them and why they are grateful.

“Thanksgiving Traditions” Essay:

Does your family have any Thanksgiving traditions that they follow every year? Perhaps you play  fun game with all of your friends and family–or go around the table and share a special moment from the year. Whatever they are, encourage  your students to write about how they spend Thanksgiving, describing the sights, sounds, flavors, and aromas of the day. If they need an extra boost, they can use this Thanksgiving Word Bank for more descriptive words.

“Invitation To Dinner” Essay:

Suppose your students  can invite one special person, living or dead, to share their family’s Thanksgiving dinner this year. Who would they choose? Would it be a favorite relative who lives far away? Or perhaps a famous person they studied in school? Ask your students to think about who they would invite and then write down 10 questions they would like to ask this person. If they really want to get creative, they can even include how the think the person would answer these questions too!

And don’t forget! If your classroom furniture is need of repairs, the time when your school is closed for the holidays is a great time to have them done! For more information on how Nickerson Corporation can help or to schedule an appointment for service, contact us at (631) 666-0200 today!
