Preparing For Earth Day in the Classroom

April 8, 2016

Earth Day is just two weeks away, which means it’s time to start prepping those lesson plans. Incorporating Earth Day related items into your curriculum is very important because your students are the future of this planet — so it will be there job to care for it one day! If you’re looking for some fun ways to teach your students about caring for the environment, just start with these.

Read – There are plenty of great books out there that express the importance of preserving our earth. Two of the most popular are The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, which can be found in almost any local library.

Learn – Spend a day or two teaching your students all about water and electricity conservation. You can even tie this into a math lesson, by asking them to figure out how much water is saved when the faucet is turned off while brushing their teeth, and so on.

Write – After you introduce your students to the meaning of Earth Day, encourage them to write a story or poem about the importance of recycling and conserving. Have them illustrate their masterpieces and hang them on the bulletin board to share.

Explore – Take your students outdoors for a lesson in the environment. Consider taking them on a nature walk field trip where they can experience several different types of plants and animals. There may even be local Earth Day activities that you and your students can take part in.

Create – Turn your Earth Day lesson into an art lesson, by encouraging students to create art from recycled materials. You’ll be surprised with what they can reimagine! In terms of creating, you can also build a compost bin for your classroom or school, or create a nice garden by planting flowers and trees.
