Language Arts Lessons for Mother’s Day

April 29, 2016

Mother’s Day is next Sunday, which gives you plenty of time to work some “mommy magic” into your language arts lesson plans for the coming week. While the traditional idea is to create something memorable for mom, there’s no reason why your students can’t practice their writing and illustration skills in the process.

All of the love, praise and devotion surrounding this wonderful holiday make it the perfect time to encourage students to get in touch with their inner poet! Here are some great writing prompts to get your students started on creating the perfect give for mom this year.

My Favorite Memory – Have your students recall their most cherished memory with mom, and invite them to write a short story or poem about that moment. If time allows, invite your students’ parents to come in for show and tell!

The Ultimate Gift – If they could give any gift in the world, what would your students give their mother’s this Mother’s Day and why? Encourage their imaginations to run wild by allowing their gifts to be as fictitious as they please.

Personalized Poem – What better way for your students to show their appreciation for mom than by writing a personalized poem. Introduce acrostic poems to you students, and then have them create one, using the letters of their mother’s name to begin each line going downward.

How will you and your students be celebrating Mother’s Day in the classroom? Tell us all about it on our Facebook page!
