3 Teaching Tips to Survive the Week Before Winter Break

December 18, 2015

Surviving the week before holiday break is as difficult for teachers as it is for students. With all the commotion and excitement in the air, it’s easy to lose focus and control. To help, here are three simple tips we’ve found can work wonders to help you keep your cool and keep your classroom calm during the days leading up to the holidays.

  1. Stick to business as usual. While there are bound to be a ton of holiday activities going on in your school next week, try not to make those the main focus. Keep to your normal schedule and only discuss holiday parties and assemblies when absolutely necessary.
  1. Set behavioral expectations. It can be tempting to ease up on your students around the holidays, but this will cause more harm than good. In fact, it’s beneficial to review the classroom rules and expectations at the beginning of the week to keep them on track.
  1. Prepare accordingly. Keep your lesson plans low-key, especially towards the end of the week. Not only will your students inevitably lose more and more focus as the week goes on, but your own holiday plans will be top of mind. Sticking to simple, meaningful lesson plans is the way to go.

As you prepare yourself, your lesson plans and your classroom for the holiday break ahead, pay special attention to your classroom furniture. If you find that your desks are wobbly and run down and your classroom storage options are malfunctioning or limited it may be time to upgrade.
