How to Pack-Up your Classroom for the Summer

June 9, 2015

As the end of the school year approaches, we’re sure you’re thinking about how you’re going to find time to pack-up your whole classroom for the summer. It’s true, packing up is a very time-consuming and difficult task, but there’s no need to worry. We’ve got the perfect tips to make your end-of-the-year packing go smoothly, and your unpacking in September a breeze!

Packing items

Capture the Layout: It’s extremely difficult to remember the layout and placement of everything in your classroom, but you don’t have to. A point-and-shoot camera will do the trick! Make sure to take pictures of everything before you start to tear it all down, that way you’ll be able to reconstruct the room in the fall..

Label Everything: You’d be surprised how much furniture is moved around over the vacation with summer cleaning and renovations taking place. The best way to make sure that everything stays put is to take inventory of your classroom furniture and label it all by room number. Not only will this keep all of your furniture in, but it will keep unwanted, cluttering furniture out! If you find items that don’t belong to you in the fall, just give the custodians a call and have them removed.

Pack Smart: Neatly pack your learning and activity centers into well-labeled boxes and bins so that you know exactly where everything should go in September. Tiffani Mugurussa, a teacher and writer for Scholastic.com, suggests packing up summer and September survival boxes. In your summer box, pack anything that you’d like to work on over the vacation, and in your September box, pack the items that you’re sure you’ll need on hand right away in the beginning of the school year.

Jumpstart Your Bulletin Boards: If your school allows you to keep decorations up over the summer, why not take some time to get started on your September bulletin boards? Decorating early will save you time in the future, so you’ll be thanking yourself when you’re running around prepping for the start of school with your bulletin boards already in place.
